WHAT IS AIDS WALK
MICHIGAN?
AIDS Walk Michigan is a
non-profit organization that began in 1998 to raise
awareness of HIV and AIDS and to raise money for local AIDS Service
Organizations in participating Michigan communities. This special
collaboration is unique in the United States, featuring 7 AIDS Walks
in 7 cities, all under one-umbrella organization, AIDS Walk
Michigan.
WHERE DO THE FUNDS COME FROM?
Funds for AIDS Walk Michigan come from a variety of sources.
Individuals and Teams participating in AIDS Walk Michigan
ask for pledge dollars from
friends, family members, co-workers or classmates to help sponsor
their walk. All donations are
tax-deductible! Your cancelled check is your receipt.
Local and statewide corporations and businesses support AIDS Walk
Michigan with cash or in-kind contributions, which help to
underwrite and support the cost of the annual event.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
The funds generated by each AIDS Walk are dedicated to HIV/AIDS
education, prevention, and care services and
pledge dollars from each walk remain in the
local community where it is raised to help support local
AIDS Service Organizations. Some local Walks direct all of the
monies raised to a single service agency, while others divide their
proceeds among more than one agency.
Local AIDS Service Organizations that benefit from funds generated
by AIDS Walk Michigan serve nearly 60%
of the 17,000 Michigan residents
and their families living with HIV and AIDS.
For some AIDS Service Organizations, AIDS Walk
Michigan is their primary
fundraising event for the year.
